I learned something today…

This morning I was awoken by the dogs once again.  Recently I started running in the mornings so I have time to do other things after work.  One issue with this is the dogs are starting to know that they get to go running in the morning.  With that knowledge, they become excited TOO early in the morning.  You can’t really blame them though.  Running is their biggest highlight of any day.  They are good motivators anyway.

We headed out the door this morning a little after five for a nice easy seven mile run.  It is the time of year when the ground will thaw out during the day and at night it freezes back up again.  During the day the dirt road we live on turns into a big muddy mess.  It is not the most fun thing to run in, especially with the dogs when they turn into a muddy mess as well.   I figured this morning the ground would be nice and firm and I wouldn’t have to worry about the mud.  Turns out, when the cars go through the road and splash up mud on the road and it freezes, it feels like running on sharp jagged rocks in the Vibrams!

Just three miles into our run, my feet felt like they were a nice piece of tenderized meat.  I toughed it out through the seven miles.  I figured whatever doesn’t kill me will make me stronger.

Currently, my feet are feeling better.  I’m not sure if that is because they are actually better or they are just numb to the pain.  A few weeks ago I started standing at my desk at work all day everyday.  I thought it would be good training for ultras and I can tell that my legs and feet are getting used to being on them all day.  I guess I’ll see if it does actually help come this summer!

In the mean time, I may have to ditch the Vibrams for tomorrows run.  I’ll see how my feet are feeling in the morning…
